Scientists from the University of California address the false-negative problem of MRI Reconstruction Networks using adversarial techniques
MR images are traditionally reconstructed by a simple inverse 2D/3D fast Fourier transform (FFT) from the raw measurements. But, there is an increasing number of MRI applications where a simple inverse FFT is insufficient, e.g. due to non-Fourier physical effects, non-linear magnetic fields, intentional under-sampling to minimize scanning times, or non-Cartesian sampling patterns. In light of these limitations, interest in model-based MRI reconstruction has risen in recent years.

Deep learning models for MRI reconstruction have proven to be more successful over traditional methods. However, it has been observed that these methods tend to miss rare small features, such as meniscal tears, and subchondral osteophytes, in musculoskeletal applications. These results are of interest to radiologists because in clinical diagnostic settings these small and unusual features are especially important.

Addressing these shortcomings of deep learning models for MRI reconstruction, researchers from UCSF Center for Intelligent Imaging have proposed a new framework for finding the worst-case false negatives by targeting the trained models with adversarial examples and enhancing the ability of models to recreate small features through increasingly robust training.
